It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' ...

Symptom:
You receive the following response when we try to access a web application-

It is an error to use a section registered as allowDefinition='MachineToApplication' beyond application level This error can be caused by a virtual directory not being configured as an application in IIS.

Cause:
Virtual directory settings are incorrect. Virtual directory will look like a regular folder in IIS manager.

Solution:
Right click on the application virtual directory (in IIS Manager)
Go to Properties Click Create (under Directory tab).
